The Chess Player/ Portrait of
a Man With Folded Arms. 2011. Oil on canvas. A portrait painting in oils that brings out the resolute and strong character of the subject. Begun and completed in the studio. After living with this portrait for a while after I had painted it, it occurred to me that the sitter looked as if he were a man playing chess (not actually the case), so I have renamed the piece 'The Chess Player'. I am considering painting a rook (chess piece) in the bottom right hand corner, as the illusion that the sitter is studying a chess game is strong for me.
